For Anyone Still Wondering About the Value of Literature…

Here is an interesting article from NPR that makes the case for one very practical benefit of reading literary fiction.  It’s also worth noting that this seems to not apply to nonfiction and genre fiction.

What do you guys think?

  1. I would advocate the point that literary fiction improves one’s ability to register the emotions and thoughts of people surrounding them because it was once a challenge for me in elementary and middle school to describe the author’s feelings. It was not until IB Literature, I noticed improvement in my recognition of other’s emotions and it could be the result of the books we read in class. I believe the intense emphasis on characterization encourages me to question my own behavior and thoughts. Interesting article; but I wonder why this study is so recent when most of the fiction of today incorporate very little literary embellishments.
